what a long day

WEST WARWICK, R.I. — One woman was killed and three others were seriously hurt in a car crash Monday night in the Clyde section of West Warwick. Police said no one in the car was wearing a seat belt.

Police said the accident happened about 9 p.m. at the intersection of Grandview Drive and Clyde Street.

A compact car, driven by Eliza A. Rathbun, 18, of Coventry, went out of control and split a utility pole in two before hitting two parked cars in a driveway, police said. Rathbun was in critical condition Tuesday.

The front-seat passenger, Sherri L. Leitao, 24, of West Warwick, was killed in the crash. Leitao’s side of the car struck the pole.

Two back-seat passengers, Krista Scorpio, 18, of Hope, and Nicole Petrozzi, 19, of Coventry, remained hospitalized with serious injuries.

Police said speed was a factor in the crash based on skid marks and the damage to the car.

“We heard the car coming down the hill, and we’re like, ‘When is this going to stop?’ And before we could get the words out of our mouths, we hear the bang,” resident Karen Meadows-Laquerre said. “They hit that pole.”

An accident happened in nearly the same place one year ago.

Krista is my best friend Jay’s sister. I just watched him on the news talking to a local reporter. I can give some information. Krista is in fair condition, and sleeping right now. She has a shattered collarbone, a broken heel, brocken rib, and lots of stitches.
